Publisher: Black Rose Writing

Description:
He wears neither cape nor cowl, but Zulu is a superhero, nevertheless.

Raised from the dead as a revenant more than a hundred years ago, Zulu possesses Spiderman’s stealth, Superman’s speed, and Batman’s keen intellect. His only companion is Morgan the Seer, an old man cursed with longevity and the ability to see the future in his dreams. Zulu has spent the last century training with Morgan in order to save the people in his nightmares from certain and violent death. Branded a vigilante by the Media, Zulu must live his life in the shadows, travelling by night or in the city’s underground unless his quest demands otherwise.

Kat is an empath, someone who sees emotions as colourful auras. Relentlessly bullied by her peers, and believing her life amounts to nothing but a huge cosmic mistake, she finds purpose in her abilities when she is recruited to help Zulu and Morgan complete their missions.

Malchus is Morgan’s long dead twin brother. A powerful necromancer, Malchus manages to find a way to return to the living, and he has a score to settle with Morgan. Believing Morgan responsible for his death and out to seek revenge, Malchus begins to raise an army of undead minions and use them to hunt Morgan down. As Malchus closes in on Morgan and his charges, the trio soon realizes the people most in need of saving are themselves.

Guest Post: The Dummies’ Guide to Revenants

Revenants are not new when it comes to superstition and folklore, but outside of their role as "World Of Warcraft" characters, the world seems to all but forgotten about these paranormal creatures. This guide should put an end to that and bring revenants, kissing cousins to vampires and zombies, to the fore.

Historically, sometimes people claimed to have seen the deceased walking around the village after death. When this happened, s/he was dubbed a revenant. Because it was thought to have been sent to terrorize the living, scared villagers dug up the corpse only to find it swollen and pink as if engorged with blood. Often this was remedied by beheading the corpse and re-burying it, its head positioned between its legs. Incidentally, this was the same procedure used for ridding a village of someone reputed to be a vampire.

One definition for revenant is “a supernatural being that returns from the dead” (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/revenant). In The Revenant, teenaged Janke returns from the dead, christens himself Zulu, and spends his life helping people in need.

Like vampires, Zulu is immortal, but he does not hunger for blood. Also like vampires, he self-heals, and has extraordinary speed, vision, hearing and strength. Another similarity is that he cannot enter a private residence unless invited in. Like vampires, a wooden stake to the heart is his Achilles heel.

Like most zombies, revenants must be raised from the dead by an external force. If they fall prey to the mind control of their necromancer, they become the mindless zombies popularized on television and in the movies. Likewise if there is an error in the raising ritual.

Unlike vampires, revenants can walk in daylight without consequence. They cannot, however, walk on hallowed ground (such as church property) or come into contact with holy water without smouldering. Zulu, like other revenants, still lays claim to his soul. It is his life force, his soul, that grounds him and enables him to maintain his humanity.

Unlike zombies, Zulu and other revenants, if correctly turned, do not crave flesh. They are sentient and retain the memory of their lives before they were cursed with becoming revenants.

Though the elders of his village have told rumours of others returned from the grave as revenants, as far as Zulu is aware, he is the only one left of his kind. Zulu teams up with Kat, an empath who can read auras, and the Seer, an old man with visions of the future, to save those in the Seer’s visions. In The Revenant, Zulu, the Seer and Kat face Malchus, a once powerful necromancer who also happens to be the Seer’s brother. Together with Kat’s priest, Father Paul, the group test their mettle as they try to defeat Malchus, for in the End Game, their battle against Malchus, none of them are safe.
