Review ~ The Debt by Tyler King

The DebteARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: May 10th 2016

Publisher: Forever Yours

Description:
Hadley saved my life . . . and I ruined hers

Hadley's my best friend. We share a house, our friends, a life. She knows all my secrets . . . except one. My desperate need for her is inked on my body, it's the best I can do. But Hadley needs to hear the words . . .

Growing up as foster kids, Hadley made me feel whole-sane. And what did I do? I destroyed our chance to be together. I ran out on Hadley when I should have stayed, and something broke between us. Now I'll do anything to fix it.

I'll never leave her again. I won't ever let her feel afraid again. But the more I try to protect her from my pain, the more I just make things worse. I'm terrified that if I tell her everything, she'll never forgive me. I'm even more terrified that it may be too late to make her mine. I have to try to give her what she needs . . . it's a debt I'm determined to repay.

My Opinion

The Debt sounded like my type of read from the blurb. What Josh had done to Hadley intrigued me and I wanted to read it as soon as I got this book. Also, being told entirely from the male's POV, it also interested me.

I'm struggling to write a review for this book, though. I really wanted to like it, but I've come away just not getting it. I can't put my finger on what the main storyline was. There seemed to be loads of issues thrown into the 300 ish pages, but they were never finished or developed to their full potential. All of them were serious issues and I don't think they were given the time and depth they deserved. Especially the twist at the end. I don't feel the characters actually dealt with anything and the problems were thrown in as the most recent phases in romance novels to try and gain sympathy. For me, there were too many issues and as a result I've been left with a lot of questions unanswered.

However, The Debt isn't a bad read. The writing is good and the friendship between Josh and Hadley--or Punky as he calls her, was interesting to watch develop. They were both messed up and the light in each other's lives.

Overall, I don't think I got what I was expecting with this book. For me there just wasn't enough depth to the plot. I kept waiting for something big to happen and one major problem to take centre stage, but I only got little things in quantity. I think the author needed to choose her issues more carefully and focus on one or two. For me, this one just didn't work.
