Dirty Pleasures

My wife.

I love saying those words.

She's mine, and if she thinks I'm going to let her run without tracking her down and bringing her back to where she belongs–with me–then she's about to be introduced to a new reality.

Because I'll fight dirty to give her the happily ever after she deserves.

Review

The ending to this trilogy surprised me. With the novella length I really didn't expect to get any twists, but there were definitely some surprises along the way. I won't go into detail too much because these stories are only short and therefore I don't want to ruin anything for anyone. However, I will say they are all hot, absorbing reads I couldn't put down. I would definitely wait until they are all released and buy the lot though. Creighton and Holly's story was an enjoyable read and I'm kind of sad it's over.

I've got a big dick and an even bigger bank account. That's pretty much where my bio ends.

Honestly, I don't need to say anything else. I've just sold 99% of women on going home with me.

Do I sound like an asshole to you?

That's because I am.

And guess what? It works for me just fine.

Or at least it did.

Until I met her.

Books talk about sparks flying. Fuck that shit. With her, it was like emergency flares mixed with jet fuel. Or maybe just straight up napalm.

Only one problem.

She wouldn't tell me her name or her number when she disappeared from the hotel room after the hottest fucking night of my life.

Now I've had a taste of unicorn pussy–the sweetest, rarest of all pussy–and I need it again.

So what's an asshole to do?

I took this problem to the street. A missed connection gone viral.

And when I find her? I'm keeping her.

Review ~ Defenseless by Corinne Michaels

Defenseless
eARC received via a tour company in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: January 19th 2016

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
My life is a secret.
His life is dangerous.
We’re both stubborn, calculating, and controlling.
Mark Dixon doesn’t know what he’s getting into. He doesn’t know his games could cost us our lives. I have to do what is necessary to keep us alive, and that means guarding my heart.
But I know I’m defenseless against him, and in the end, he’ll force me to surrender.

My Opinion

I'm so glad this author continued this series with Mark's story. In my review for Conviction I felt a little disappointed at the lack of finality surrounding Mark and Jackson's company. At the time I didn't know this book was being released, but now that I've read it, it clears up all of the loose ends left over from the duet--which I'd recommend reading before you pick up this book.

I loved Mark's sense of humour in the Consolation Duet and it carried over into this book. He always made some kind of joke, even in the worst possible situations and I loved him for it. He was an easy character to like and because of his loyalty to friends and love ones I respected him. He's also able to put up with Charlie's stubbornness which made for some interesting reading. They were a good match and I liked the back and forth as they grew together and slowly accepted their feelings.

As for the plot, I enjoyed it. It kept me engaged and I didn't find there was a dull moment. The only negative I have is the big reveal. For me the motives needed to be explained a bit more, it all kind of came out of nowhere and I'm not sure about it.

Anyway, overall it's another great read and I'm looking forward to more by this author.

Review ~ The Belonging Duet by Corinne Michaels

Beloved (Belonging, #1)
Beloved

Ebook downloaded for free via Amazon

Release Date: May 28th 2014

Publisher: Slef-published

Description:
Catherine Pope has never been enough.
She repeatedly let’s men in—only to be left broken.

Then Catherine met Jackson Cole.

Jackson makes her feel alive, desirable, and consumes her with a fierceness she’s never known.
But Jackson struggles with his own past. His training as a Navy SEAL never prepared him for the battle to win her heart. He’s different, honorable, and worth the chance…but he must prove it.

If she gives him what’s left of her heart—will he protect it? Will she get the one thing that has always evaded her – to finally be someone’s beloved?

My Opinion

This was another great read. For some reason I didn't notice I'd downloaded the ebook of this for free and started with the Consolation Duet. While that didn't impact my understanding at all, it did give away some of of the story in this book. However, that didn't make Belonging any less enjoyable or engaging. I loved watching Jackson and Catherine's story unfold to see how they got to the point in Natalie and Liam's story and I've already one-clicked book 2.

Beholden (Belonging, #2)
Beholden

Ebook purchased by myself

Release Date:

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Catherine Pope got a second chance at love, only to have it ripped away—again. She should’ve known better.
But she dared to hope.
She refuses to let fate take the reins this time. Catherine decides she’s going to fight.

Jackson Cole risked it all.
He thought this time would be different.
With his loyalties pulling him in two directions—it’s time to make a choice…his past or his future.

Will they be beholden to their fears or will they both fight against their demons and finally find the love they both long for?

My Opinion

I've really enjoyed all of the books in this series. I do wish I'd read this duet first because I think it would have had more shock value and twists, but I still enjoyed watching Catherine and Jackson find each other. There were moments that made me smile, broke my heart, but in the end it was just a great read with characters I loved.

Review ~ The Air He Breathes (Elements, #1) by Brittainy C. Cherry

The Air He Breathes (Elements, #1)
Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: September 25th 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
I was warned about Tristan Cole.

“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”

It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.

But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.

We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.

Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

My Opinion

This was a moving and touching read about two broken people learning to love again. I found this author through a signing I'm planning on attending and I'm glad I did. The Air He Breathes was an emotional read that kept me hooked.

I will admit sometimes it was a little jumpy and the ending kind of comes out of nowhere. I thought parts needed more development so they weren't so abrupt, and sometimes it moved a little too quickly for me. I didn't always buy into the emotions or recovery, but for the majority of it I did.

Overall I'll definitely check out this author's future work and I'd recommend this.

Review ~ Pretty Bird by Olivia Howe

Pretty Bird
ebook received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: October 21st 2015

Publisher: Booktrope

Description:
Kenna loses her forever, Derrick, in a tragic plane crash that kills everyone on board—150 people, including the love of her life. People keep calling her lucky, but she feels the opposite. Now she has to move on with her life without Derrick in it and no strategy for getting past this senseless tragedy.

Investigators tip her off that there may be more to the story… behind the crash, the menacing Company that controls people, and even her dead boyfriend.

When someone tries to kill Kenna again in her own home, she is shocked into action and starts to uncover the truth about the corruption and craziness around her, finding herself and her heart again in the process. They say that time heals all wounds. Kenna has a chance to find out if that is really true.

My Opinion

Sigh...

These are the reviews I always hate writing. I expected a lot from this book after reading the blurb, and the cover was so pretty, but sadly it just didn't deliver. I really wanted to like it, I wanted a nail-biting thriller with a bit of romance, but it's just not what I got.

Pretty Bird has an interesting concept and there's a lot of potential in it. The secrets, corruption, undercover sections, and avenging girlfriend make for an interesting plot. However, for me it needs a lot of development. I felt the author skipped over the tiny details that linked everything together and in doing so the book lacked credibility in my eyes so I couldn't buy into the story. For example, I wanted to know how Kenna survived. Why her? What saved her and no one else? I know it's not unheard of people surviving plane crashes, but it's rare with the way the author set this up. Obviously there wouldn't be a story if Kenna had died, but it needed to be believable and for questions to be answered.

Similarly as the story progressed, everything was just to easy and convenient. From getting the job, getting caught, and then solving all of the problems, it was over in the blink of an eye and that was the crux of the story. Personally I felt the author didn't know how to get Kenna to fix everything so it fades to black and comes back after all that's gone on. While that might work in some cases, here it left too many questions. The bad guys just seemed stupid for an organisation that apparently had members right into the government. To pull off what they were doing they needed to be efficient and well organised. I didn't think Avery would make such a simple mistake.

As for the romance, I didn't buy it. Things moved too quickly and it lack emotional depth. Just like my other comments on the plot, the author needed to focus on the tiny details. The story needed to be fleshed out as what I read felt very much like the bare bones.

Overall Pretty Bird has potential, but for me it needed more. There were too many questions left unanswered and I didn't think the mystery or romance was credible. I wanted to like it and I just wish there had been more to it.

★ BOOK TRAILER ★

★ ★  WHAT EARLY REVIEWERS ARE SAYING ABOUT HIS CONFESSION ★ ★

"His Confession was a surprisingly engaging read with believable characters who were easy to connect with.It dealt with subjects a little different to what I'm used to, but the author did a great job of pulling me into her world.” - Mia Hoddell, YA/NA author.

”His Confession pulled me through from the first paragraph! The enigmatic Darion practically leapt off the pages and I could picture his every move and facial expression clear as day in my head! This story is definitely one to add to your “want-to-read” list-especially if you love a captivating plot as well as scenes so hot that they fog up your glasses. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it for future readers but DARION and GABI put Christian and Ana to SHAME! Enough said. LOL.” - Kiarra M. Taylor, contemporary romance author of THE QUARTER CHANGE.

”I loved it and I'm excited to read more to find out what happens. Darion is a great guy who was hurt badly and doesn't know how to handle, which in steps Gabi. Love love love her! Hopefully she fights for him! When does the next book come out, as I'm dying to know what comes next! I also hope the girls get their own stories.” - Susan Flynn, Beta reader Writers club.

”S. Valentine does an exquisite job at creating a dynamic between two characters, both from different worlds, that goes beyond a physical attraction. His Confession is book one in The Black Door Trilogy. It is a fast paced story that is full of hotness and anticipation that heats you up from your head to your toes. Gabi, is tired of always playing it safe. Darion, has demons that he can no longer control. When these two get together, boundaries are pushed, control is tested and emotions run wild.” - AV. Scott, author of High Heels & New York.

"A brilliant book which leaves you wondering what happened in Darion's past that has left him so wary and so afraid to put himself and his heart out there not to mention to put his faith and trust in Gabi, the one woman whose managed to penetrate the walls he's built. I can't wait for book 2 and I'm hoping that Darion and Gabi can overcome the obstacles that stand in front of them, including Eva, Darion's ex wife.” - Rebecca Barber, author Nobody's Obligation.

Review ~ See How They Run (Embassy Row, #2) by Ally Carter

See How They Run (Embassy Row, #2)

eARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: January 14th 2016

Publisher: Orchard Books

Description:

The second thrilling book in the EMBASSY ROW series.

Grace thought finding her mother's killer would bring her peace. But the truth has only made her a target. on Embassy Row, trust is a luxury. Death is a very real threat. And a girl like Grace should be very careful about which secrets she brings to light...

My Opinion

Lately this author's work has been splitting my opinion. I've followed her books for a long time, and I really can't figure out why I'm so torn.

The thing with this series I'm finding is that I like the end, but I dislike getting there. The start/middle of this book seemed to drag for me and I just wanted to get to the twist at the end. That's the reason I stuck with it. The author doesn't fail to deliver an intriguing ending that makes you want to read on.

I think the main reason I'm struggling to get through this author's work lately is the age of the characters. I'm quite a bit older from when I first picked up and Aly Carter book, and maybe that's why  not enjoying them as much because my tastes have changed and I need more depth of emotion from characters. I find it hard to connect with younger characters.

Overall this was a case of I stuck with it out of loyalty to the author. I knew she'd deliver the ending I was after but I don't know if it was worth it. I think I wanted to like it more than I did. That's not to say this is a bad read, like I said, I think it's my age so this may work for you completely so if you like this author definitely give it a go.

Review

I shouldn't have started this book so soon, for two reasons. The first is that it was over too soon, and the second is that now I'm desperately waiting for the final story and it's going to be a longer wait than if I had started it at the end of the month. However, I had to find out where Creighton and Holly's story would take them next.

Dirty Pleasure was an interesting and hot follow up. I loved every second and I also liked the change in the characters' marriage. I thought there were plenty of interesting emotions and especially on Creighton's side of things. I liked the small changes he made to accommodate Holly and because of that the ending left me wanting to bang their heads together. Once again it leaves on a major cliff hanger so I'd advise waiting for the third book to be out before starting this one unlike me.

Overall another great read. Both books have been short, hot, and engaging stories.

Review ~ Dirty Little Lies (Quick and Dirty, #1) by Clare James

Dirty Little Lies (Quick and Dirty, #1)ebook received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: January 2014

Description:
Twenty-nine-year-old Stevie Sinclair has just lost everything: her boyfriend, her apartment, even her ugly bird named Free. (Yeah, she knows it’s a stupid name, so don’t start.) But most importantly, Stevie’s lost herself.

As she shuffles through her days in worn-out Hello Kitty PJs—eating ice cream, sipping wine, and contemplating her next move—a magazine article catches her attention. Blaring black letters read: "How to Get Your Sexy Back in Six Easy Steps."

Stevie studies the article in the trashy magazine like the good student she is and immediately knows what she has to do. With the magazine article in hand, and a bottle of red in her bag, Stevie embarks on a journey to reclaim her life and win back her ex.

Until she meets Gabe Shannon. Gorgeous, single, and on a quest of his own, Gabe introduces Stevie to a lifestyle that is sure to help get her sexy back and then some. If she doesn’t chicken out … (Oh, you know where this is going.)

My Opinion

As a quick read this was okay. I stuck with it because of the length, but it didn't engage me as much as I thought it would. This is probably a case of me not the book so I wouldn't not recommend it to those of you looking for a short, erotic read. I just found it hard to buy into the relationships and characters.

Review ~ Fighting to Breathe (Shooting Stars #1) by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Fighting to Breathe (Shooting Stars, #1)
Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: July 6th 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Lea Lamb and Austin Wolf were young when they fell in love. They never imagined the future could hold anything other than together-forever.

When Lea’s father dies in a tragic fishing accident, she's crushed under the weight of her grief and catches a glimpse of another type of future, one she knows she's not strong enough to face.

Austin is angry. For the past fifteen years, he's believed the woman he loved with every ounce of his soul left him without so much as a backwards glance.

When Lea unexpectedly returns to their hometown, all the years of heartache inside Austin bubbles to the surface and presents itself as blinding rage.

Faced with the truth about the past, a newly discovered secret, these former lovers will learn that if they want to have any chance at the future they’d given up on all those years ago, they will have to rescue one another from drowning in pain so debilitating it will leave them both fighting to breath.

Warning this book is intended for mature audiences and may contain triggers for some.

My Opinion

This was a quick, easy read. I did expect it to drag more emotions from me, but unfortunately it didn't garner much of a response. Everything in the story felt a little easy for my liking. I didn't feel there was much to the actual plot.

It was still an enjoyable read. It just needed more depth for me to have engaged with it more.

Reviews ~ King & Tyrant by T.M. Frazier

King (King, #1)King (King 1)

Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: June 15th 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Homeless. Hungry. Desperate.

Doe has no memories of who she is or where she comes from.

A notorious career criminal just released from prison, King is someone you don’t want to cross unless you’re prepared to pay him back in blood, sweat, pu$y or a combination of all three.

King’s future hangs in the balance. Doe’s is written in her past. When they come crashing together, they will have to learn that sometimes in order to hold on, you have to first let go.

Warning: This book contains graphic violence, consensual and nonconsensual sex, drug use, abuse, and other taboo subjects and adult subject matter. Although originally slated to be a standalone, KING is now a two part series.

My Opinion

This is the first book I've read by this author and oh my god it was a journey to go on. The whole book had this raw and gritty feel. King annoyed the hell out of me with his attitude but I also rooted for him. It's also another story with a major cliffhanger so once again I'm glad I purchased the box set. It meant I could jump straight into Tyrant. And believe me you'll want to.

Tyrant (King, #2)Tyrant (King 2)

Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: August 16th 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
I. Remember. Everything.

Only now I wish I didn't.

When the fog is sucked away from my mind like smoke through a vacuum, the truth that has been beyond my reach for months finally reveals itself.

But the relief I thought I would feel never comes, and I'm more afraid now than I was the morning I woke up handcuffed in King's bed.

Because with the truth comes dark secrets I was never meant to know.

I will put the lives of those I love most at risk if I let on that my memory has returned, or if I seek help from the heavily tattooed felon who owns me body and soul.

I don't know if I'm strong enough to resist the magnetic pull toward King that grows stronger every day.

He's already saved me in more ways than one. Now it's my turn to do whatever it takes to save him.

Even if that means marrying someone else...

My Opinion

I enjoyed this as much as King. It's a roller coaster of a book with twist and turns. It kept me engaged and was a read I couldn't put down. I will definitely be reading Bear's story when both books are out in the duet. No way am I being left on a cliff hanger!

Conviction (The Consolation Duet, #2)Conviction (The Consolation Duet 2)

Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: May 27th 2015

Publisher: BAAE Publishing

Description:
I fell in love with Liam only to be left shattered into a million pieces. Again. The idea of being without him cripples me but the reality is, he’s gone.

He doesn’t understand and I can’t make him.

If only he’d see the conviction behind my words—then Liam would still be here.

My Opinion

This drew me in as much as book one. I liked the emotional intensity and drama, even if I think there were a few loose ends with Jackson and Mark's business. I also wasn't a fan of the ending. It needed to feel more natural to me and this all felt abrupt. Maybe that was because I was so caught up in the book. Either way a moving and emotional duet. I will definitely read more by this author.

Reviews ~ Choices 1 & 2 by Ellie Wade

A Beautiful Kind of Love (Choices, #1)A Beautiful Kind of Love (Choices 1)

Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: April 11th 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Every choice has a consequence.

I believe in soul mates. Why? Because I have one and his name is Jax Porter.

I have known Jax my whole life and I have loved him with every breath I’ve ever taken. The fact that we were born a mere month apart to mothers that are best friends has made us inseparable since birth.

What we have is so rare, one would think our story would be written, our fate sealed. But, unfortunately that’s not how life works. Life offers us many choices that can turn destiny into chance.

I now find myself heading toward a destination that I could have never imagined and I have to figure out where to go from here.

Will the choices that have been made change our path forever or will fate find its way?

My Opinion

This was a touching, frustrating, but overall enjoyable book to read. I liked the idea behind it, but god I wanted to bang the characters' heads together. They were so frustrating, especially Jax and his decisions. I'm not going to say much since I bought this for pleasure reading, but I had to move on straight to book 2 immediately because of the cliffhanger.

A Forever Kind of Love (Choices, #2)A Forever Kind of Love (Choice 2)

Paperback purchased by myself

Release Date: June 2015

Publisher: Self-published

Description:

Every choice has a consequence.

I believe in soul mates. Why? Because I have one and her name is Lily Madison.
I’ve loved Lily my whole life. She’s all I’ve ever known. All I’ve ever seen. Everything. To me, she is perfect.
Sometimes, when something has always been there, it is hard to recognize it for what it is. It is easy to take for granted. I didn’t realize how deeply Lily was ingrained in every fabric of my soul because I’d never had to feel her absence.
It’s all so obvious now, but at the time it was not. I had to figure it out on my own.
I wish I could have realized what it was that was truly important in life because once choices are made and paths are altered…it is so hard to go back, sometimes impossible.
I know this because I stand here with a two-carat engagement ring in my hand waiting to ask someone to be my wife. I’m ready to love and cherish her ‘til death do us part. But, there is just one problem.
She isn’t Lily.

Will the choices that have been made change our path forever or will fate find its way?

My Opinion

This was an okay read, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first. I could have, but unfortunately too much of the book re-hashed the story from A Beautiful Kind of Love just in Jax's POV. Though it was nice to hear from him, I think the author should have written both books in dual POV if she wanted to do this as I ended up skimming the first third, which was basically the same story. I wanted the book to get to the point quicker and pick up from the cruel cliffhanger book one left on.

Saying that, once it finally did get going it was touching and moving. It was also equally frustrating, even more so since most of this book is written in Jax's POV. If there was an award for stupid, incomprehensible decisions it would have to go to Jax. It made for an interesting read though. There was a lot of back and forth in the relationship areas, but I found myself enjoying it and I'd more than likely read more by this author.

ARC Review ~ Tell Me You Want Me (Search and Seduce, #2) by Joya Ryan

Tell Me You Want Me (Search and Seduce, #2)eARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: January 4th 2016

Publisher: Entangled Publishing

Description:
She’s getting dirty with the bad boy…

Determined to find her inner badass and save her business, boutique owner Michelle Ruby signs up for a twenty-four hour survival class. Except, she’s the only person who registered, and the guide is a sex-on-a-stick G.I. Joe come to life. Between his massive muscles, smoldering blue eyes, and “there’s no crying in camping” attitude, she’s in trouble…in more ways than one.

Search and rescue squad member Dex Young never thought he’d be roped into teaching “survival skills” to pageant queens. His sole student is upper class, upper state, and sexy as hell. And he has a sneaking suspicion that beneath her tight updo and designer jeans, there’s a sex kitten waiting to claw her way out.

But Dex knows women like her. Knows they only bring guys like him home to piss off their daddies. If it’s the bad boy experience she wants, she’ll get it. And Dex? Well, he can’t wait to find out just how dirty Michelle’s willing to get…

My Opinion

Tell Me You Want Me sounded like a book that was right up my alley. Hot survival expert? Yep. Wilderness training alone? Yep. Everything about that had loads of potential for passion and romance. Unfortunately it just didn't work for me.

I struggled to engage with the characters if I'm honest. I didn't feel they were developed enough, but rather they were almost cookie cutter moulded with a standard, simple background that wasn't tied up. There wasn't enough detail for me to actually feel anything.

Similarly, although there were a few steamy moments, I didn't really buy into the connection between Dex and Michelle. Sometimes it was cheesy and I just lost interest as the book went on until I was skimming.

Overall this just didn't work for me. Maybe my expectation were too high? I don't know, but there didn't feel like there was enough emotional depth or story. I didn't know who or what to root for. There's potential, but I think more detail and book is needed.
